Chelation Therapy
Chelation therapy uses chemicals to remove metal ions from the body. [Chelation is the process by which a metal or mineral (such as lead, mercury, arsenic, aluminum, etc.) is bonded to another substance so it can carry them away in urine, feces or sweat. http://www.u-ok.net/chelation.html]
There are several chemicals and natural substances used: [list chemicals and target metals]
-EDTA, by far the most widely used
-Phytate (Phytic Acid, IP6, InsP6, myo-inositol hexakisphosphate), particularly effective in absorbing iron. Possibly more effective than desferrioxamine (desferral).
Amoung its other
properties, curcumin is a strong iron and copper chelator.
-EGCG
[The following list from http://www.gordonresearch.com/articles_oral_chelation/edtachel.html]
-eicosapentaenoic acid
-garlic
-ginkgo
-EDTA activated polysaccharides
-bromelain
-rutin
-malic acid [http://www.life-enhancement.com/article_template.asp?ID=509]
-cilranto (coriander plant) aluminum, mercury, ???

Desferioxamine
Dr. McDougall:
Dr. McDougall advocates a healthy fat-free, dairy-free, animal-protein-free diet of unrefined complex carbohydrates. Many of the ailments we in the Western world suffer from can be alleviated by changing our diet and lifestyle, he argues. But, he is not at all adverse to using medications as a last resort.

EDTA Chelation Therapy
EDTA is the shorthand name for an amino acid ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetic [list other names]. There are several varieties of this, such as calcium-EDTA, disodium-EDTA or magnesium-disodium-EDTA
You can get much more information about chelation therapy from these sites:
http://drcranton.com/chelation.htm
Dr. Cranton is a strong advocate and defender of intravenous (only) disodium-EDTA chelation therapy.

http://www.gordonresearch.com/articles_oral_chelation/edtachel.html
Dr. Gordon is a strong advocate and defender of either IV or oral calcium EDTA chelation therapy.
You can read the arguments for each of their cases as these two battle it out.
Dr. Cranton argues that mainstream traditional medicine wont accept chelation therapy because it is cheap, and widespread use will cut into the incomes of cardiologists, bypass surgeons, and drug companies.
Dr. Gordon argues that those physicians like Dr. Cranton that insist that IV chelation is the only effective method, and that chelation using oral EDTA is ineffective and dangerous; these folks are afraid that very inexpensive oral chelation methods will cut into their lucrative IV chelation practice.
Herbals:
-Chlorella
-Cilantro [cite info from articles, and sources]
I was able to find articles from the man Dr. Yoshiaki Omura who is credited with this discovery. [list the document source on the internet and how to find]

Conclusion:
The only real truth is that there
are
substances that can be
administered through an IV, in an intra-muscular injection, through the
mouth,
or other methods that will remove metal ions from the body.
What is not known is if removing metal ions
prevents, inhibits, alleviates, ameliorates or cures diseases. And if
it does, which metals cause which
problems, and how do they cause it chemically and biologically. In
other words, chelation therapy does in
fact remove metal ions from the body; but does it do any good?
Secondly, does it do any harm even if its
beneficial effects are questionable?
